After some chores in the day i headed to Nottingham to see symphonic metal band Delain http://www.myspace.com/delainmusic at Rock City. Had a Wagamama dinner first which really blended well with the Cory Doctorow book i was reading on my ipod while dining.
Then on to Rock City - it was held in the smaller hall not the main hall. It was comfortably full. Say - 100? First band was Nottingham band Isolysis - they weren't bad. Needed keyboard i thought - guitarist was good - not sure about the vocals.
Next band Achilla was female led - again the guitar player was good - the vocals were killed by the attrocious PS - I wasn;t convinced by what i could hear that she was a great vocalist. Again really needed keyboards.
Then Delain - it was fun hearing the songs I'd been playing so much from their album April Rain live - they used a backing track for all the choiry and techy sounding bits and some harmonies - which I;d not seen done before but it was very smoothly done. Sadly the PA sound remained dire (no top, no fullness - just boxy middle) but Charlotte Wessels incredible voise is so good it rose above it - it did get a bit lost in the loud bits tho, and the drums were way loud - It sounded like they were used to playing a bigger hall. The crowd tho went mad for them and Delain were clearly delighted with the response. I really enjoyed hearing my fave songs played - I was afraid they weren't going to play "Lost" but they did it 3rd encore - phew...
Met them all after (and got autographs - blush) they were all so young, especially Charlotte. But what a voice - she could go high but also had the power low as well. Nice to catch a band which have a feeling they are on thee start of a wave.
So that was my first trip to a real metal gig - or a rock venue i fact - it wasn't too loud - perhaps coz it was n the smaller hall. - it did remind me how short I am tho... I was not as i had expected to be the oldest man there tho - not at all - quite a few older.. Fun was had. Sleepy now tho..
some nice Delain vids
