Just back from another excellent convention - all run smoothly - many thanks to the concom for a great weekend.
con report ahoy
Today I;m coming into Land recording a piano part at a firnds studio for their songs album.
con report ahoy
Fri
I arrived in good time to eat and attend opening ceremony and caught most of Bill Ropers set, always a pleasure, and bought his new album - I then dipped in and out of the concert room as new arrivals came and welcoms made so I only caught a few songs each of Anke & Nemesis in a great Filkers In Black set, and Valerie Housden whose sets I always enjoy. I then did some sound teching for the GKs and their Rutland Rockers band, who did an especially great song about wanting a baby with a snooze control. It was evident in teching with Deborah that she was such a wizz at it - an amazing ear and concentration. I didn't do much more tech over the weekend I confess, just dipping in now and then.
The Friday circle was a sleepy and mellow one on a theme of death when i was there. I sang Empty House Time Machine and Carousel.
Sat.
Not a great night sleep - all the excitement I guess. I only caught a couple of songs by Katy & Ju - a shame as I always love their music.
I caught most of the one-shots which were divided over ontot the Sunday to prevent a marathon Saturday session. I then needed a nap and to rehearse and choose my set. I didnlt manage to fit the nap in before auction - presided over brilliantly by Roger Robinson. I realised late that i had a rough mix in the car of my album-to-be of lost songs. I tossed it late into the auction adn swooned when it reached 50 POUNDS! Dined with Anne Whitaker & son James.
GoH Rika Koerte & her band - an 8 piece band - elec violin, reeds, elec guitar, 2 x keybds, and more. wow what a set - really ambitious set of orchestrated folk-rock with Rika's voice really suiting the genre with a Celtic edge to it. Really wowed the crowd.
GoH Jeff & Maya Bohnhoff - I;d seen these in San Francisco - they did a marathon 1 hour 45 set and the audience lapped it up as delicate songs alternated with funny rock filks, Jeffs consumate guitar and gentle wit and Maya's bewitching voice and presence - I just couldn't take my eyes of her when she sings.
I was of course getting a little jittery having to follow these 2 great acts and nipped out to adjust the set a little etc. I decided as it was Sat night that mostly singalong & silly songs would be the order of the day barring a couple of quiet oens in the middle.
Set - Andromeda Bound, The Fish Song, Monkeys on the Moon, Lifespell (joined by Tim Walker on talking drum), theremin spot (Cry Me A River), Circle of One, Oses Again (new song), 3 Headed Girl (with Mich, Katie & Marilisa), theremin (improv), Alien Salad Abduction, Alien Jellyfish Song
It seemed to go well - uxexpectedly so The Fish Song - and all I know is I expended a lot of energy - needed a banana, biscuits and a hot choc QUICK after the set. Sat awhile recuperating in good company at the bar. Joined a turkey reading session of some atrocious lyrics that came with CD Talis had bought and sold at auction. Much hilarity. I joined the circle and played Unicorn Girl for the 1st time for years. Pumpkined at 2am.
Sun
Packed kit and saw some of the delightful Angry Antz with Steffi & Silke from Germany. Checking out loading the car took me a little while sadly missing Kathy Songbird's set. :-(. I made the whole of the n'Early Music Consort who I alwasy love - such good music for a chillin Sunday arvo at a con. I recorded with my new recorder. Then one shots - Bill & Brenda's song about Monkeys in song was a highlight tho there was much to enjoy. A shame that this set was too late for the Sam Awards :-(
The Sam's - I was gobsmacked at my Fish Song won best silly song. I mean I knew it was sill y but....best? Which meant singing it again. People kept saying "fish" or "Hatstand" to me as we passed down corridors much of Sunday.
The Fish Song mp3 2mb - set version from back of hall (thanks to Dave Weingart)
The Fish Song mp3 2mb - award ceremony concert
Other winners were Mich for her lovely new song (Pictures in the Air), Rika (Best at con performance for Paper Worlds) and Talis's Paper Worlds as Filk Gold which they sang togeether with Rika's band. This was Awesome and a great end to the con. A classic song, with classic band and writer performer on board. The GKs teching made for a great sound too. A special filk moment.
Then closing ceremony, very glad to have the con back at the same hotel next year.
Packing, goodbyes, CDs from sale room (sold 5 - 2 Earth Risings, 2 Celtic Fires, 1 Just Be Real)
Almost went for dinner with the gang but I was really tired and figured I woulda gone to sleep in the restaurant.
A great con - and a mellow one for me - despite my usual fidgetyness I found some time for some loger chats with folks. A lot of people were tired but mellow and tired and happy in each others company.

Date: 2008-02-06 12:50 am (UTC)Ciaran here from the con - I did one of the one-shots on Saturday, "I'm Singing Live". Was great to meet you :D
Just a quick question - in the chorus, is the third line "in the land of the Hatstand Fan Man Clan" or is it something else? Just trying to make sure.
And I liked your theremin playing. Makes me want to get one. :D
