Govannen wedding Ceilidh at Enderby
Nov. 15th, 2010 04:58 pmAll went weel - nice people - we even sold a CD. I hadn;lt had a good night sleep so was tired but it went well
One of my all time hereoes Danish trumpeter Palle Mikkelborg came to the South Bank - Ive beena fan for 25 years so was very excited by this. First band were a young piano/bass/drums trio Phronesis - nice enough - a bit EST-like you guys strutting their modern jazz stuff.
Then the main feature. Percussionist Maralyn Mazur came out aand played on the biggest set of percussion you ever saw, all scaffolded around her - hit some gongs and made atmospheric tinkles. Then - from offstage Palle Mikkelborg makes some plaintive trumpet sounds with huge reverb & delay and evenually comes out from behind curtain - and they play a little together. Then harp player Helen Davies (Mikkelborg's wife) and guitarist Mikkel Nordsoe came out. Lots of atmospheric music but soem lively bits too. Found a youtube of a lively bit from a previous concert. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rmr-8dkNHLI
The music included a new commissioned suite which incorporated some of Mikkelborgs best known tunes from Anything But Grey and Song Tread Lightly. Mikkelborg walked the stage as if to talk to one of the other players - there was a kindof spiritual feel about it - they were so together and conveyed so much with just a nod or a smile. Helen Davies had some nice reverb echo effects on her harp and the reverb was definitelky an instrument in itself. The guitarman was more of a support giving it power when it needed it. Overall - perfect sound - small space (Purcel Room) and only 4 rows back. One of the best gigs I've ever seen.
