odd day - had a gig playing piano & singing at a very fancy retirement home. Hard to know where to pitch it - if you were 40yrs old at Woodstock Festival , you're over 80 now.
A pal of mine who did this gig prepared lots of Daisy Daisy type songs only for them to request the Beatles & 60s pop etc. I did a mix of classic jazz standards (Summertime, Fly Me To the Moon) and a smidge of 60s (God Only Knows & Call Me) and did a little low whiatle and did Lifespell with kaliba for variety. Well..sometimes they clapped and sometimes they didn't. Someone afterwards said I wasn't really playting their era and perhaps wartime songs would be best. When I quizzed everyone aftewards on what music they liked it was obvious that one couldn;t cover it all - from a former church organist, to a fan of Pink Floyd & Elton John. One guy wanted a CD with the kalimba song on it.. I only played for 45mins but I was knackered by the end of it.
In the evening went to the openeing of the Early Music Festival and caught Dame Emma Kirkby and lutanist Anthony Rooley. It was in the St Mary De Castro church which dates back to 1180 - Chaucer was married there and Henry VIth was knighted there. Altho I usually like a fuller instrumentation I enjoed it more than I expected. Dame Emma's voice was pretty amazing - especially high up - music was Dowland, Blow, Purcell and some lute interludes. Only thing was I wich there had been a little staging to raise them up a bit as it was hard to see them from just about anywhere in the church barring the front - especially as they mostly played sitting down. G had to go at half time but when I drove her home I went back for the rest. Spoke to Emma Kirkby afterwards and had nice chat with her aboutthe Gesualdo 5th Book of Madrigals CD she and Rooley had made sometime ago which is a fave of mine. She was convinced we had met before and said I seemed very familiar. I bought their Dowland CD.
