Messaien at the Cathedral
Sep. 22nd, 2008 06:47 pmHad a lok at the new quarter in town - landed like a spaceship - a couple of streets of Moon City in old Leicester town. Went to Wagamama for noodles then to the cathedral for the concert - international Music Fest. The program was.
1. Bach - Partita - solo oboe - nice enough - kinda made me want to hear it on soprano sax.
2. Stravinsky - Rite of Spring - 4 hands on 1 piano - interesting worked well on the piano - reminded me of music they play to arty old silent movies done this way - slightly over long perhaps
3. Messaien - Music for the End of Time - cello, clarinet, violin, piano - longer this but with sopme amazing passages - espeically the quiet bits prison camp to 300 soldiers in 1941.
All in all - good for the soul. Big turnout - maybe 300. Saw some old chums - Moira R & Steve Cartwright amongst others and met a jazz friend I;d hgeard about but nbot met who recently got a MBE.
